Top 5 tips to make your perfume last all summer long

Why does perfume fade faster in summer?

Do you feel like your perfume disappears more quickly as soon as temperatures rise? This is completely normal.

In summer, heat accelerates the evaporation of fragrance molecules. Sweating, frequent swimming and sun exposure can also affect the way a perfume develops on the skin. As a result, even your favourite fragrance can seem to fade more quickly.

The good news is that a few simple habits can help extend its longevity. Here are the five most effective tips.

    1. Moisturise your skin before applying perfume

This is probably the most important tip.

Well hydrated skin holds onto fragrance molecules better than dry skin. On the other hand, when the skin is dehydrated, perfume evaporates much faster.

Before applying your fragrance, use an unscented moisturiser or body lotion. This thin layer helps the perfume adhere better to the skin and allows it to diffuse more gradually throughout the day.

Ideally, apply your perfume right after your shower, when your skin is clean and perfectly moisturised.

    2. Apply your perfume to pulse points

Not all areas of the body diffuse fragrance in the same way.

Areas where blood vessels are closer to the skin naturally release more heat, which helps fragrance notes develop over time.

    Focus especially on:

    • the inside of your wrists

    • your neck

    • behind your ears

    • the inside of your elbows

    • the back of your knees when wearing a dress or shorts

A few sprays are enough. There is no need to apply a large amount: the way you apply your perfume matters more than the number of sprays.

    3. Never rub your wrists together

It is a habit many of us have… and yet, it is a mistake.

After spraying perfume on your wrists, avoid rubbing them together. This creates friction that can alter the first notes of the fragrance and make them disappear more quickly.

Simply let the perfume dry naturally for a few seconds.

This allows you to experience the true evolution of the composition, from the top notes to the base notes.

    4. Take a travel size with you for a touch up

Even with the best tips, a fragrance is naturally affected by a full day at the beach, swimming or high temperatures.

The easiest solution is often to apply a light touch up in the late afternoon or before a summer evening.

A travel size easily fits into a handbag or suitcase and allows you to rediscover the full intensity of your perfume in just a few seconds, without having to carry your main bottle everywhere.

    5. Apply perfume to your clothes (with care)

Textile fibres often hold fragrance for even longer than the skin.

A light mist on a scarf, a cotton shirt or the inside of a jacket can help extend your scent trail for several days.

However, delicate materials such as silk, leather or fragile fabrics can be stained or affected by the alcohol contained in perfumes. It is therefore always best to test on a small, hidden area before applying your fragrance.

Making your perfume last all summer is all about adopting the right habits

Making your perfume last longer does not only depend on its concentration. Everyday habits play an essential role.

Moisturising your skin, applying perfume to the right areas, avoiding rubbing your wrists and planning a touch up when needed will help you fully enjoy your fragrance, even under the summer sun.
