The city of perfume where history and fragrance meet

Get to know Grasse better !

Situated in the sunny hills of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Grasse stands proudly as the perfume capital of the world. Its rich history dates back to Roman times, but it was during the Middle Ages that the town really prospered thanks to the flourishing leather and tanning industry. Over time, this activity evolved into the perfume industry that characterises Grasse today.

From the 12th century onwards, tanners settled in the Provençal town of Grasse. Despite their quality, the smell of the skins was disgusting. The nobility's infatuation with gloves waned sharply, while perfume was a runaway success. And so the profession of perfumer was born.

Grasse became a popular holiday destination for European nobility, attracted by the Mediterranean climate and picturesque landscapes. Local perfumers perfected their art, cultivating precious flowers such as jasmine, rose and tuberose to create unique fragrances.

The industrial revolution brought major changes to the perfume industry, enabling mass production. However, Grasse has managed to preserve its traditional know-how and craftsmanship, becoming a world centre for the creation of luxury perfumes.
